Acne Scarring and Pigmentation Treatment

General information

Acne scars develop in areas where former cystic blemish lesions have been present. Acne scars come in three varieties:

  • Atrophic, which are mostly shallow

  • Boxcar-shaped

  • Ice pick-shaped, which are narrow and deeper.

People with deeper skin tones may also notice darkening (or hyperpigmentation) within the scars, while people with lighter skin tones may show redness (or erythema) within the scars.

If your acne scars don’t fade away on their own, it may be time to consider booking an appointment with doctors at Orient Clinic. At our clinics, we are frequently asked if anything can be done for old acne scars. This condition, a result of previous nodular/cystic acne, is emotionally taxing for many patients. Fortunately, we do have several weapons in the fight against this disfiguring condition. Modern acne scar treatment options include microdermabrasion and laser treatments.

Microdermabrasion Treatment for Acne Scar Removal

Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating the superficial layers of skin. This process works well with more recent scars and generally takes several treatments to see results.

Laser Treatments for Acne Scar Removal

Laser treatment is one of the most successful means of treating acne scars. The fractional CO2 laser (Lumenis™ FX) is the latest device used to treat this condition, and the results are often stunning. We are seeing results far superior to those seen with older devices (such as Fraxel, CoolTouch, Smoothbeam, N-lite, etc).

Our Pulse Dye laser (Vbeam) is also effective in treating some forms of acne scarring, especially if there is a red or vascular component to the lesions.

Another effective treatment is using Matrix RF Resurfacing that is designed for ablation of soft tissue and resurfacing of the skin.

Lumenis FX™ Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment Information

The CO2 Laser has long been considered the “gold standard” device for laser skin resurfacing of the skin in an effort to correct wrinkles, laxity, scars, and pigment problems. Although effective in the right hands, the lengthy downtime and somewhat narrow safety window associated with this procedure limited this laser’s widespread use….until now.

Rather than affecting the entire skin, the Lumenis UltraPulse® CO2 laser ablates only a fraction of the skin surface, allowing bridges of non-affected tissue to stimulate rapid healing. This new approach to fractional laser skin resurfacing is more comprehensive, and considerably more effective, than previous fractional systems utilizing other laser systems.

Matrix RF Resurfacing

The Matrix RF treatment is designed for use in dermatological procedures for ablation (removal) of soft tissue and resurfacing of the skin. The Matrix RF allows for a customized approach of fractional bi-polar RF (radio frequency) energy, allowing all skin types and locations (except eyelids and lips) to be treated. Benefits of this treatment include the reduction of wrinkles, skin laxity, scars, acne scars, textural irregularities, tone, and superficial skin lesions.

Vbeam®

Vbeam Perfecta is the gold standard and the world's best selling pulsed-dye laser. Time and again it proves itself as the safe, easy-to-use tool for the treatment of vascular, pigmented and certain non-pigmented lesions with a low incidence of side effects.
